Mummy Meatballs

Mummy meatballs are savory beef balls seasoned with herbs and garlic, baked until cooked through, then wrapped in crispy strips of puff pastry or cheese to resemble mummies. The result is a playful appetizer with tender interiors and a crunchy exterior, finished with small eye details for added charm.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef preferably with some fat content
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 sheet puff pastry thawed if frozen
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese cheddar or mozzarella, for wrapping
  • 1 egg egg wash beaten
  • 20 small edible eye candies for decoration

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Mixing bowl
  • Cooling rack
  • Small knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Form the seasoned beef mixture into small uniform balls, about 1 inch in diameter, and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are fully cooked and have a golden exterior. Let them rest for a few minutes to cool slightly.
  5. While the meatballs cool, roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut into thin strips about 1/4 inch wide, long enough to wrap around each meatball.
  6. Wrap each cooled meatball with strips of puff pastry or cheese, overlapping slightly to create a mummy-like bandage appearance, leaving space at the top for the 'eyes.'
  7. Arrange the wrapped meatballs back on the baking sheet. Brush their surfaces with beaten egg wash to help them crisp up and gain a shiny finish.
  8. Bake the wrapped meatballs in the oven for an additional 10-12 minutes, or until the pastry is crispy and golden brown.
  9. Once baked, remove the mummy meatballs from the oven and place them on a cooling rack for a couple of minutes. Decorate each with two small edible eye candies to complete the mummy look.
  10. Serve the mummy meatballs warm or at room temperature as a fun, spooky appetizer perfect for Halloween parties.

Notes

For extra creepiness, add small strips of black olive or seaweed as 'wrappings' and use contrasting colors for the eyes.
