Ingredients

  • 4 medium ripe tomatoes chopped
  • 1 bunch fresh cilantro chopped
  • 1 medium red onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 lime lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 serrano or jalapeño pepper finely chopped, optional for heat

Equipment

  • Chef's knife
  • Cutting board
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spoon

Method

  1. Start by chopping the ripe tomatoes into small, even pieces. Place them into a mixing bowl to create a colorful base for your salsa.
  2. Add finely diced red onion to the bowl, which will bring a subtle crunch and sweetness to the mixture.
  3. Mince the garlic cloves and stir them into the chopped ingredients, releasing a fragrant aroma.
  4. Chop the fresh cilantro leaves and toss them into the bowl, adding a burst of herbal freshness.
  5. Squeeze the juice of a fresh lime over the mixture, then sprinkle in salt and freshly ground black pepper to season evenly.
  6. Finely chop a serrano or jalapeño pepper, adding it to the bowl if you want some heat, and stir everything together thoroughly.
  7. Let the salsa sit for 10-15 minutes at room temperature, allowing the flavors to meld and intensify.
  8. Give the salsa a final stir, check the seasoning, and adjust salt or lime juice if needed. Serve immediately with chips, tacos, or your favorite dishes.

Notes

For a milder salsa, remove the seeds from the chili. This salsa is best enjoyed fresh but can be refrigerated for a day.
