Baked Onion Rings

Baked onion rings are a crispy, golden snack made by coating onion slices in seasoned flour, egg wash, and panko breadcrumbs, then baking until crunchy. This method eliminates the mess of frying and offers an even caramelization of the onions, resulting in a tender interior and a satisfying crunch on the outside. The final appearance is crispy, golden rings with a tender, sweet onion center.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium yellow onions firm, plump
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour seasoned with salt and pepper
  • 2 large eggs beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs lightly toasted
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • cooking spray oil spray for crisping

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat
  • Three shallow bowls
  • Mixing spoon or fork
  • Spray bottle or pastry brush

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat for easy cleanup.
  2. Peel the onions and slice them into 1 cm (½ inch) thick rings. Gently separate the rings with your fingers, aiming for uniform pieces that will cook evenly.
  3. Set up three shallow bowls: one with seasoned flour, one with beaten eggs, and one with toasted panko breadcrumbs mixed with paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Dip each onion ring into the flour first, turning to coat evenly and shaking off excess. Then, dip into the egg wash, ensuring full coverage.
  5. Next, press the onion ring into the breadcrumb mixture, pressing lightly to help the coating adhere well and create a crispy exterior.
  6. Arrange the coated onion rings on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each to allow for even baking.
  7. Lightly spray the onion rings with cooking spray or mist them with oil to help them turn golden and crispy during baking.
  8. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until they are deep golden brown and crispy around the edges.
  9. Remove the onion rings from the oven and let them rest for 2-3 minutes to set the coating and prevent sogginess.
  10. Serve the baked onion rings immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, like spicy ketchup or ranch, while they’re warm and crispy.
